Southern Voice Tour

March 9th, 2010

Tim McGraw is synonymous with country music. He’s a musical staple and a male role model who seems to never go out of style. So great is his influence in the musical world that other singers have songs dedicated to him, such as Taylor Swift’s “Tim McGraw”. Not only is his voice arguably the go-to for country hits, Mr. McGraw also has the daring and dedication to dip into other genres and add his vocal talents in with such rappers as Nelly. But what makes Tim McGraw really great is that he is coming to Little Rock, Arkansas on April 9th!

If you love the heart wrenching lyrics of “Don’t Take the Girl” or melt at the beauty of  “She’s My Kind of Rain”, then this concert is definately something you can’t afford to miss. For a tiny pinch of your check, $81, you can experience all that comes along with the deep emotions felt through Tim McGraw’s sultry voice. Start the summer off right, scribble in your appointment to see Tim himself on April 9th and head down to the Verizon Arena. Imagine just how great it will be to brag about seeing this bright, shining country star in person. You know your bestfriends will be so jealous! After all…what are memories made of?

“Don’t Be Tardy for the Party”

March 9th, 2010

Out of all the celebrities that have come from Atlanta, the most recently famous or…infamous are the five lovely ladies of  The Real Housewives of Atlanta.  With the booming popularity of reality television shows, we have all heard something or another of the scandalous lives of these powerful women of Atlanta.

The Real Housewives of ATL is a reality TV series on Bravo that premiered during Fall 2008.  Even though Atlanta was the third series to premiere in the Real Housewives franchise, it has not only been the most popular of the series, but also the most watched on Bravo.  The show is ultimately about the dramatic lives of five powerful women who live in the metropolitan area of Atlanta.

From designing their own clothing lines, to raising children, to writing books,  to multimillion dollar divorce settlements, I think it’s safe to say that these five women have extremely busy lives.

If you have heard anything about the lives of the Atlanta housewives,  I’m almost positive it is either the cat fights between the women, or maybe even Kim Zolciak’s attempt at becoming a professional singer through her single “Don’t be Tardy for the Party”, but instead deciding to design her own hairpieces which sell for over $400.00 dollars a PIECE.

But does it really matter what we think about these five women?  Obviously they are doing something right to keep us (their viewers) intrigued.  So please ladies, keep the cat fights coming!

Shiny Toy Guns to Perform in Bloomington

March 9th, 2010

Shiny Toy Guns will be in Bloomington in a few weeks. No, I’m not writing about actual weapons, I’m referring to one of music’s best kept secrets, indie/electronica rockers; Shiny Toy Guns (STG) will be performing at the Bluebird Nightclub in a Private Jack Daniels Show on March 23rd.

The band, best known for hits such as “You Are the One” and “Le Disko”, which both broke the top 30 in Billboard’s Alternative Hits Chart, will definitely satisfy fans of multiple genres. STG mixes smooth basslines, catchy electronic beats, and the complementary voices of vocalists Chad Petree and Sisely Treasure to create tunes that appeal to the masses. Their first two albums, “We Are Pilots” and “Season of Poison” both were Top 100 albums in the Billboard 200, and they are currently promoting their newest CD, “Girls Le Disko”, which is a remix album featuring their most popular tunes. Among the featured DJs on “Girls Le Disko” are famous Dutch DJ, Ferry Corsten and American record-spinner, BT.

Interested in going? Call The Bluebird at 812-336-3984 or follow them on their Twitter account: thebluebirdbar, and ask about how to obtain tickets for this must-see event.

Famous Alumni of Sam Houston State University

March 8th, 2010

Attention Bearkats, Sam Houston State University (SHSU) has educated more celebrities and noteworthy figures than you think it has. Among those famous alums include a well-known newscaster, numerous professional football players, and even a former prime minister of Thailand.

Dan Rather, a journalist best known as the anchor of the CBS Evening News graduated from SHSU with a BA in Journalism back in 1953. In his 1978 autobiography, The Camera Never Blinks, he jokingly mentioned that SHSU was also known as Sam Houston Institute of Technology (figure that one out for yourself). The joke even went as far as making it into the 2006 college comedy film, Accepted, in which the University featured, is known as The South Harmon Institute of Technology.

Do the names Josh McCown and Rhett Bomar ring a bell? Those former Bearkat quarterback standouts are now professional football players. McCown, who is currently a free agent, had his best NFL season in 2004 with the Arizona Cardinals in which he threw for 11 touchdown passes. Bomar, SHSU’s all time leading passer, is currently a backup for the New York Giants, but expects to make an impact when called upon.

Don’t halt your aspirations to become a future world leader just yet. Thaksin Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand from 2001-2006, earned his doctorate in Criminal Justice from SHSU.

Who will be the next big Bearkat? It just might be you!

2010 Academy Awards Recap

March 8th, 2010

The 82nd edition of the Academy Awards was definitely another night to remember. Superstar actors, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin hosted the show which marks the first time in 20 years that the ceremony was co-hosted. Another thing worth noting is that this year’s event allowed ten films to be nominated for best picture, a practice which was discontinued after the 1943 awards. Were there any surprises? You bet.

While fan favorite, Avatar and dark-horse, The Hurt Locker entered the night with 9 nominations each, The Hurt Locker ending up being the big winner of the night, earning 6 Oscars, which included two of the major awards: Best Picture and Best Director. Going into the night, Avatar, the highest grossing film of all time, was expected to win those aforementioned awards. It’s quite interesting that Kathryn Bigelow, the director of The Hurt Locker, is the ex-wife of Avatar director, James Cameron. Many writers acknowledged this fact and went as far as dubbing the Academy Awards as “The Battle of the Exes”. Bigelow’s wins signify victory of David vs. Goliath proportions, as she is nowhere near as renowned as Cameron.

No matter your preferences, the 82nd edition of the Academy Awards was unquestionably one for the history books. Here’s to next years event being even more exciting!
