Counting our Losses

As Americans we have often prided ourselves on our education, fully understanding that knowledge is power and that power lays within exceptionally educated youths. However, in recent years we have seen more and more education cuts. For whatever reason, our school system seem to be falling onto the back burner! And Las Vegas schools are no exception to this catastrophic trend. As the budget crisis became ever more dire, more than two years ago, the first to count their losses was grades K-12. Classes were stuffed with children and teachers were slivered away to the bare minimum. The idea was that education would lag for a little bit and then recover. Unfortunately the predicted outcome did a three sixty and got worse instead. But the real horror is that now even colleges like the University of Nevada at Las Vegas will be cut by as much as 6.9%. The budget cuts, again, are in hopes that with time it will all revert back to what it’s supposed to be. Unfortunately history has taught us that such wishful thinking is dangerous to our children and therefore ultimately our future. If we hold onto the idea that knowledge is power and that our children are the future, than how can we be comfortable with disempowering that very same future. Education is key, starting with Kindergarten and ending with that esteemed college degree!
