Famous Alumni of Sam Houston State University

Attention Bearkats, Sam Houston State University (SHSU) has educated more celebrities and noteworthy figures than you think it has. Among those famous alums include a well-known newscaster, numerous professional football players, and even a former prime minister of Thailand.

Dan Rather, a journalist best known as the anchor of the CBS Evening News graduated from SHSU with a BA in Journalism back in 1953. In his 1978 autobiography, The Camera Never Blinks, he jokingly mentioned that SHSU was also known as Sam Houston Institute of Technology (figure that one out for yourself). The joke even went as far as making it into the 2006 college comedy film, Accepted, in which the University featured, is known as The South Harmon Institute of Technology.

Do the names Josh McCown and Rhett Bomar ring a bell? Those former Bearkat quarterback standouts are now professional football players. McCown, who is currently a free agent, had his best NFL season in 2004 with the Arizona Cardinals in which he threw for 11 touchdown passes. Bomar, SHSU’s all time leading passer, is currently a backup for the New York Giants, but expects to make an impact when called upon.

Don’t halt your aspirations to become a future world leader just yet. Thaksin Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand from 2001-2006, earned his doctorate in Criminal Justice from SHSU.

Who will be the next big Bearkat? It just might be you!
