A massive riot, including crazy dancing, flaming run-away trash cans and seven law enforcement offices, broke out in response to public education. Students at UC Berkeley were the leaders of the rabble rousers, even going so far as to incite non-students into the frenzied mob. It was supposed to be a relatively mild protest in support of public education, but it turned into a crazy assemblage that no one could properly handle. What started as a fun loving dance party at Upper Sproul Plaza led to the exciting take over of Durant Hall. One UC Berkeley senior and one alumnus were arrested on counts of inciting a riot, resisting arrest and assaulting an officer. It is clear that students today are pushing to be different; to let their voices be heard. However, 2010 has grown from the past couple of years and brought with it tension and aggression. Protesting may be a spectacular way to gain attention for a notable cause, throwing a whole city into shock does more to validate the opposition than to help. As college students it is our duty to make a mark on the future, and our job to make sure that indentation is one worthy of us and our times.
