Money always seems to be tight. UC Berkeley students know that being in college has a way of draining your financial reserves. Of course, there is the salvation of the summer. With the sweltering heat and the time off from the constant studying many students opt for a summer job or two. Racking in the dollars seems to be the main objective for going on summer break. Bills need to get paid and student loans are screaming at the top of their lungs for your attention. And spending money on yourself seems just a little out of reach for now.
Even if you can’t use any of the five hundred dollar check you get for busting your butt on treats for yourself, make sure you take a small chunk out for that empty emergency fund. Start off with taking ten percent and putting it into a savings account each pay day. You never know when that car is going to give out in a fit of smoke and whines or even when your sister might desperately need to borrow a nice chunk of change for something worth while. Unless you can accurately predict the future there is no way of telling what is going to happen when. Just make it a habit to put money into a fund for unexpected emergencies and sleep better at night knowing you’ve taken care of yourself for the future.
