iPhone Case Offer Disappoints

After numerous reports claiming Apple’s new iPhone 4 dropped signal with a single touch, Apple held a press conference on Friday, July 16th to confront the issue. The iPhone 4 press conference, which aimed to address the “design defect”, has upset some, including Apple’s competitors and iPhone 4 owners. Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, admitted Friday “you know, we’re not perfect. We know that, you know that. And phones aren’t perfect either. [...] We first learned that this doesn’t just happen to the iPhone; Nokia, Motorola… other phones have this issue. [...] It’s a challenge for the whole industry. Every phone has weak spots.”

Jobs claims there is no bug and that all phone antennas are subject to human interference. He also said Apple would provide a free case to all iPhone 4 buyers who request one through the company’s web site, beginning at the end of this week.  The case lessens the interference by protecting the antenna from human contact. “However, Apple has indicated that this is not a long-term solution, it has guaranteed the offer only through September 30th, and has not extended it unequivocally to customers who bought cases from third-party vendors. We look forward to a long-term fix from Apple. As things currently stand, the iPhone 4 is still not one of our recommended models,” Consumer Reports said.
