Campus Safety and ISU Freshmen

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

After the tragic and eye opening events of the Virginia Tech massacre back in 2007, one would imagine college campuses across the United States would have increased their  classroom protocol and campus security. However, it seems as though the recency effect has faded, and the nation has subconsciously forgotten about the fear many college students must have felt. It is commendable that Illinois State University continues to take campus safety to almost an airport security level.

“Being a public university, there are not too many strict rules. Of course, Illinois State University is a dry campus and vandalism is not tolerated. ISU police patrol the area especially on nights and weekends. Their presence is known when walking around campus. After midnight, students must check in to their dorms with their student ID and room key, and visitors must be checked into the dorm by a resident. This involves a signature and photo ID of the visitor. This is known to be a hassle for students with visitors.”

Although this may feel similar to being under the parental watch many first year college students try to flee by going away to college, the entire campus benefits from these precautionary procedures. This ensures there is documentation of any visitor on these campus owned dorms, and helps to reduce or ward off anyone seeking to commit acts of violence or mischief. Even if it may be a hassle or buzz kill for Freshman, the actions taken by the university to protect its students appears to take priority above convenience.

32nd Annual Chicago Jazz Festival

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

“The great composer/bandleader Duke Ellington died in the summer of 1974. Just a few weeks later, several dozen Chicago musicians held a festival to honor him, at the old bandshell at the south end of Grant Park. Ten thousand music lovers came, marking the first of what would become annual memorial concerts that drew crowds of up to 30,000.”

Decades later, this grassroots gesture continues to hold true to its basic tradition of honoring new and old jazz musicians. Held every Labor day weekend since its debut appearance, this year’s events will begin on September 2nd and continue its chorus until September 5th. Chicago’s Jazz Festival has become such a spectacle it has expanded to two additional locations at Millennium Park and the Chicago Cultural Center to the original Grand Park venue. Aside from the amazing music, the quaint appeal is that this  festival is free to all participants.

As a spectator, you will be able to enjoy music in the comfort of your own selection of grass, accompanied by the freedom to dance and eat where ever your heart desires.  The beauty of jazz is that any person, at any age can enjoy its instrumental translation of the human soul through the trumpet, the saxophone, drums, piano with the occasional interruption of vocals. This year you can jazz up your mundane Labor Day plans and enjoy renditions of John Coltrane, Louis Armstrong and many more, at no cost. Lady Gaga at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, MN

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

“When Lady Gaga was a little girl, she would sing along on her mini plastic tape recorder to Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper hits and get twirled in the air in daddy’s arms to the sounds of the Rolling Stones and The Beatles.”

This Italian female has now transformed into her own unique superstar and pop artist. Her most notable, top charting hits include “Just Dance”, “Bad Romance” and “Poker Face”. This musical inventor is in fact so unparalleled, she has begun to refer to fans and followers as her “little monsters”. Hence, the irony in the name of her concert excursion, The Monster Ball Tour.  With her outlandish style and theatrical stunts, her performances are truly one of a kind. Lady Gaga’s fame encouraged her to embark on a world-wide tour from cities across the United States to various venues throughout Europe. This being said, it would be like witnessing a piece of history to attend her concert in Saint Paul, Minnesota at the Xcel Energy Center, located less than a half hour from the University of Minnesota. She is scheduled to perform two nights at this setting: August 30th and August 31st. If you are interested in becoming one of the millions of monsters, tickets are available at Lady Gaga’s personal website:  http://www.ladygaga.com/events/
