Planning Spring Break?

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

It’s that time of year again! It’s time to start planning your fabulous Spring Break! The time is coming when it will be getting hotter outside, and sundresses, shorts and tanktops are back to making their appearance! Spring Break is so soon; meaning no class, no exams, no homework. Just a whole week of no work and all play. Popular vacations spots range from Mexico, to going skiing, to even across the Pacific Ocean in Europe! Some students take advantage of this the best they can! However, grabbing up a few friends and taking a trip to the beach is always a close second option for way less money and just as much fun!

If you’re leaving your apartment for the break, make sure to safe-proof it! Turn off all lights, clean out the fridge and take out all trash so that when you return home, you’ll have a nice, clean place to come back to. Start prepping now!

5 Tips For Healthier Living

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

These days, students are becoming more and more conscious about their health. Getting started on the path to healthier living is not that difficult of a task. The following tips will jump start your successful journey to optimal health:

1. Start Walking - Next time you go to school or work, park a little farther than you usually do. Walking is an excellent and simple form of exercise that only requires a pair of shoes.

2. Relax - Find a part of the day to relax and enjoy yourself. The maintenance of stress control contributes to cardiovascular health.

3. Use Stairs - Instead of going up and down elevators or escalators, burn some fat by using the stairs. Walking up the stairs is an excellent aerobic exercise.

4. Stop Smoking - Smoking not only causes lung cancer, it is also linked to numerous other diseases. Studies show that smoking reduces life expectancy by 7 to 8 years.

5. Drink Alcohol in Moderation - In the college environment, it’s hard to say no to alcohol consumption. If you choose to drink, do so in moderation. Excessive drinking can cause liver and kidney disease later in life.

These are just a few of the many tips that will guide you toward healthier living. Good luck in your quest to healthier living!

Four Tips For Better Sleep

Saturday, January 28th, 2012

From late night study sessions to partying all night long, many college students are lacking in the sleep department. The following tips will help you get the most out of sleep time:

1. Keep a regular sleep schedule - If you keep a regular sleep schedule (going to bed and getting up at the same time each day), you will feel much more refreshed and energized than if you sleep the same number of hours at different times.

2. Create a relaxing bedtime routine - If you make a constant effort to relax and unwind before bed, you will sleep easier and more deeply. A peaceful bedtime routine sends a signal to your brain that it’s time to wind down and let go of the day’s stresses.

3. Eat right and get regular exercise - Your daytime eating and exercise habits play a role in how well you sleep. A proper diet and regular exercise will optimize your sleep and overall health.

4. Keep anxiety and stress in check - Do you find yourself unable to sleep or waking up night after night? Residual stress, worry, and anger from your day can make it very difficult to sleep well. Sleep is a time of rest and relaxation so put your daily stresses aside.

Abide by these tips, and you’ll be well on your way to better sleep and better overall health!

Will you join Google+?

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Will you be joining Google’s latest craze? With the unsuccessful stories of Google’s previous ‘products,’ this new launched social networking is now labeled as a ‘project’ instead of a ‘product.” Basically, Google+ for dummies is an attempt to combine Facebook’s wall, Twitter’s tagging, FourSquare’s location tools and combine into one sharing tool where you can even attached pictures.

For example, if you wanted to let a few friends know you were at the local ice cream shop, you could use Google+ to attach your location, tag specific friends from a Circle (another Google+ feature), and upload a picture of double scoop of Chunky Monkey all in one post. You can check out the Demo anytime. Everything is new and updated and this could be the next big “Facebook.”

Will you give it a shot?

Eating Healthily 101

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

As we all know, 1 in every 3 Americans is considered overweight or obese. While many blame this critical domestic issue on genetics and lack of exercise, much of this can be attributed to a poor diet. Eating a well balanced diet is essential for current overall health and in the long run. Following these simple tips well guide you toward the right track.

1. Cut Down on Soda - Most sodas contain a great deal of sugar and even diet sodas contain chemicals that may contribute to weight gain

2. Eat More Fruits and Vegetables - We’ve all heard the quote, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. It’s a very valid quote because apples, other fruits, and vegetables contain antioxidants and phytonutrients which are essential for optimal health. Instead of eating cookies for a dessert, eat a fruit. Instead of dipping chips in ranch dip, do your body a favor and use carrots or celery.

3. Eat Whole Grain Wheat Bread - For the most part, white bread has no nutritional value. Whole grain wheat bread is high in fiber, iron, and folic acid which are essential for favorable health.

4. Take A Multivitamin - In today’s busy world, sometimes it’s hard to take the time to eat right. Taking a multivitamin will provide your body with the nutrients that you could not obtain through consumption of food.

If you currently abide by these tips, good job and keep it up! If not, good luck in your path to better health!
