zoolights1

Every year we slowly see it happen. We anticipate the nightfall when all of the houses, buildings and landscape become tiny, bright masterpieces, glowing in the darkness. We are all curious who will have the most exhilarating outdoor lightbulb and decor display of the season that will be the most unforgettable. Although most of us are novice at making extensive creations, however some seem a little bit more skilled on occasion, it takes visiting an establishment that specializes in outdoor light exhibitions.

The light display at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago is more like an exquisite work of art. ZooLights is free and open to all from the end of November until after the holiday season from 5pm until 9pm every evening. Not only will you be able to see more than a million beautiful lights, but you can also see live ice sculpting demonstrations while enjoying a warm drink. This year, ZooLights is partnering up with One Warm Coat to help the less fortunate this winter season. Coat-donation stations will be at Regenstein African Journey, Regenstein Center for African Apes and the lower level of Park Place Café day and night throughout ZooLights (Nov. 26-Jan. 2). If you have unused coats, bring them along on your zoo visit and make the season warmer for people in need.

El Dìa de los Muertos at the Navy Pier!

Monday, November 1st, 2010

“The month of October is what most Americans associate with traditions of Halloween. We start to tell the traditional stories and legends of Hallow’s Eve. People of all ages start to look for the perfect costume for that one time of the year where we can pretend to be someone else. For the most part, this is a holiday of leisure, entertainment and scares. In Mexican and various Latino cultures, this is a special time of year for them to celebrate and remember loved ones who have passed.

“The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The celebration occurs on November 2 in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints’ Day (November 1) and All Souls’ Day (November 2). Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts. Due to occurring shortly after Halloween, the Day of the Dead is sometimes thought to be a similar holiday, although the two actually have little in common. The Day of the Dead is a time of celebration, where partying and eating is common.”

Even if this is not the traditions of your culture, it is always great to expand perspective on how others live their lives. The Navy Pier is hosting a Mexican culture celebration and and exhibition incorporates fun activities, mask-making, live music, dance and sugar skull painting to honor the departed. Experience the art of ofrenda building, a Mexican altar decorated with symbols of rebirth in remembrance of their deceased loved ones and much more! This is all for the $mart cost of zero dollars! The event begins November 1st and continues until November 4th from 10am to 3pm daily. For more information regarding this event, visit the Day of the Dead website.  dia-de-los-muertos-art-rj21

Summer may be the best time to catch a concert, but those student loans may be holding you back from seeing the dynamic Lady Gaga on her Monster Ball Tour. According to Ticketmaster.com, standard admission to see the reigning queen of pop at Madison Square Garden costs just a few dollars short of $200. Tickets to see crooner Michael Bublé at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas go for $95, with auctions starting at $450 per ticket. If classic rock is more your thing, you could expect to pay over $70 for a single ticket to see the legendary glam band KISS.

But don’t worry, Lollapalooza is coming back to Chicago’s Grant Park August 6-8, offering coutless concerts for one low price. The three day event will feature Green Day, Lady Gaga, The Strokes, Pheonix, MGMT, MuteMath, and Switchfoot, just to name a few. Lollapalooza has featured a diverse range of bands and has helped expose and popularize alternative rock groups such as Pearl Jam and Nine Inch Nails for the past 19 years. Conceived and created in 1991 by singer Perry Farrell as a farewell tour for his band, Jane’s Addiction, Lollapalooza ran annually until 1997, was revived in 2003, and has since been reworked into its current format as a weekend festival at Grant Park in Chicago, IL.

His most successful single is “Wavin’ Flag”, an inspiring anthem of perseverance which made it to both the American and Canadian Billboard top 100 charts. The song was also chosen as Coca Cola’s anthem for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
