Rapper Drake Coming to Austin

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

A few years ago Aubrey Graham’s claim to fame was portraying the wheelchair bound ex basketball star Jimmy Brooks on the television series: Degrassi: The Next Generation. Now he is one of the biggest names in mainstream rap music. Using his middle name as his stage moniker (let’s face it, an androgynous name like Aubrey will ruin any and all street-cred), he has skyrocketed into a worldwide household name with hits such as “Best I Ever Had” and “Over”. He will be performing at Austin’s Waller Creek Amphitheatre on Friday May 21st.

Not unlike Asher Roth, Drake’s rise to fame seems to have happened overnight, however Drake’s multiple charting singles prove that he is not a one-hit-wonder but is here to stay. Add that to the fact that he is a major rapper in rap legend Lil Wayne’s Young Money label, and his success is insured for the long run. Drake utilizes complex metaphors and allusions to pop culture to entertain listeners and convey his skills as a wordsmith.

Harlem Globetrotters Coming to Austin

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

If you’re an Austin based sports fan, you should definitely check out the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters at the Frank Erwin Center on Sunday, April 11th. The dynamic group entertains fans by mixing high flying basketball skills with ridiculous theatrics. They will be visiting Austin as part of their 2010 world tour.

This New York-based team, has been amusing the masses since their inception in 1926. Notable members of the legendary squad include former NBA stars Wilt Chamberlain and Connie Hawkins. Originally they were a serious competitive team that only displayed their flashy moves after having a comfortable lead, but they eventually evolved into the hilarious and comedic athletes that they currently are. The group is so famous, that they even had their own Saturday morning cartoon and a live action variety show in the 1970s and in October 2009, the development on a new Harlem Globetrotters animated series was announced. Everyone should watch this amazing group of athletes at least once in their lives.

Tickets start at a super affordable $15, which is perfect for a college student on a budget. Also, the Frank Erwin Center is on campus, so if you’re a University of Texas student that likes basketball, there is no excuse to not see the Harlem Globetrotters!

Great Urban Race Coming to Austin

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Do you think you know Austin like the back of your hand? Do you like scavenger hunts? Do you enjoy watching The Amazing Race on CBS? If so, you just might be interested in participating in The Great Urban Race on March 27th, a one-day city-wide competition which will surely challenge your mental and physical strengths.

Sponsored by St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, this event will challenge teams of two or four (in the family division) with 12 difficult clues scattered at stations throughout the downtown Austin area. How hard can they be? A few examples of clues from last month’s Great Urban Race in Houston include eating a full Serrano pepper, making an origami crane, and taking a picture at a significant landmark at a specific time. Sounds easy? I failed to mention that you have to figure out the locations for yourself from the clues which are worded like riddles.

Ready to race? Teams can register online at www.thegreaturbanrace.com at the following prices: $120 for a team of two, $240 for a team of four (family, at least one member must be 18 or under). The top 25 teams in each division will earn an invitation to the Great Urban Race National finals in Las Vegas, Nevada and the top 3 will receive cash prizes and paid airfare to the event. Good luck!
