The Harlem Globetrotters Are Coming To San Antonio!

If you’re a sports fan that goes to UTSA, you should definitely check out the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters at the AT&T Center on Thursday, January 26th . The dynamic group entertains fans by mixing high flying basketball skills with ridiculous theatrics. They will be visiting San Antonio as part of their 2011-2012 world tour.

This New York-based team, has been amusing the masses since their inception in 1926. Notable members of the legendary squad include former NBA stars Wilt Chamberlain and Connie Hawkins. Originally they were a serious competitive team that only displayed their flashy moves after having a comfortable lead, but they eventually evolved into the hilarious and comedic athletes that they currently are. The group is so famous, that they even had their own Saturday morning cartoon and a live action variety show in the 1970s and in October 2009, the development on a new Harlem Globetrotters animated series was announced. Everyone should watch this amazing group of athletes/entertainers at least once in their lifetimes.

Get Ready For More Spurs Action!

With the NBA lockout over, it’s an exciting time to be a basketball fan. The NBA season will kick of on Christmas Day 2011 and teams will be playing a 66-game season. The San Antonio Spurs are looking to win their first NBA title since 2007.

Over the past ten years, the Spurs have been an NBA powerhouse and they are looking to take home their 5th NBA Finals trophy. The team is led by the “Big Three” of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker along with key role players such as Gary Neal, DeJuan Blair, Richard Jefferson, and Matt Bonner. They have one of the deepest squads in the NBA and their stellar record is a direct reflection of that.

The Spurs have a special program for college students called “Spurs U” which offers discounted tickets to college students including $30 lower level seats and $5 standing room seats. Coffee House Wednesdays - A chance to enjoy your coffee (or just take a break) while listening to the smooth sounds of an acoustic café. Come and hear a professional singer/songwriter every Wednesday from 9pm-11 pm

UCinema Nights - Swing by the Retama Auditorium on any Friday or Saturday evening to watch one of the latest flicks and enjoy free popcorn while you’re at it

Poetry Jam - Check out the UC for a spoken word blowout! An important figure of the spoken word will be brought to campus once a month to entertain the masses

Open Mic Night - Have talent on the mic? Showcase your poetry or vocal talents to fellow students at this monthly event

The Roost - Take a break from studying and/or unwind with your friends at this amazing student entertainment facility. The Roost offers a wide variety of ways to have a great time such as Billiard, Air Hockey, and Foosball tables, several video game consoles with a large selection of games, and Four 42 inch flat screen TVs to enrich the gaming experience.

UTSA Football Season Is Here!

It’s been a long time coming, but UTSA finally kicked off their inaugural football season. They started the season on the right note with a 31-3 stomping of Northeastern State in front of 56,000 rowdy fans in the Alamodome (an NCAA attendance record for a new football program). Quarterback Eric Soza, a transfer from Texas State, led the team with 237 passing yards, 102 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Led by national championship-winning coach Larry Coker, the Roadrunners will be playing smaller schools this season in preparation to face tougher competition next year, when they will join the Western Athletic Conference.

The Road Runners home games are on the following dates:
Sept. 10: McMurry (USAA Military Appreciation Night)
Sept. 24: Bacone College (Homecoming)
Oct. 8: South Alabama
Oct. 29: Georgia State
Nov. 19: Minot State

Students get free admission to games and can purchase guest tickets for the college-budget-friendly rate of $10. VIA will provide transportation from UTSA’s main or downtown campuses to the AlamoDome for a small fare. Grab some friends and head out to the AlamoDome for UTSA’s next game!
