Sunday, May 29th, 2011

What started as a dream in the spring of 1998 has developed into a perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of today’s hectic world. Mackinaw Valley Vineyard hosts a winery, tasting room and gift shop. Sample full bodied dry and sweet red table wines, blush wines, sweet and dry white wines and two dessert wines for your enjoyment. Due to the climate Mackinaw is able to cultivate French American hybrid varietals such as Vignoles, Seyval Blanc, Baco Noir, Frontenac, Corot Noir, St Pepin and Cayuga White just to name a few. Wines are available for complimentary tasting and purchase by the bottle or glass to enjoy in our tasting room or out on one of our deck or patio areas.

Visit the Mackinaw Valley Vineyard June 4th to enjoy these wines and some music. Playing high energy dance music from the 50’s through today, the West McQueen band (named after a street in Peoria) will get you on the dance floor and keep you there all night. There will be a $5 band cover charge, and will last from 7pm until 10:45pm! It is the perfect escape for a summer night. For patrons 21 and over.

Tips for Surviving Finals Week ISU!

Saturday, May 7th, 2011

Few words in the English language strike more fear into a young undergrad more than the words finals week. Finals week instantly brings to mind many unpleasant mental images such as hours upon hours of intimate time spent with textbooks, endless reviews with TAs and peers, memorizing vocabulary words scrawled on index cards and long nights spent in the library.

Here are some tips to help you refocus and take control of your academic responsibilities:

1. Don’t panic (make too much of the final)
The first thing you should dois to check what the final is worth in each course. Remember, it is only one
component of your final grade.

2. Make time for “renewing” activities
This is NOT the time to stop exercising or doing other things that you find enjoyable. Pace yourself! You will study more effectively if you spread things out and take breaks.

3. Get enough sleep. Don’t pull an “all nighter”
You will do better if you are rested, and cramming often leads to a superficial and confused knowledge of the material you have studied. There is a reason why sleep deprivation is used as torture.

4. Resist the urge to party on “off” days
Instead, if you have a break in your exam schedule, use it to get a head start on the exams coming up. This can be a time to catch up on missed reading or assignments

5. Arrive on time for the exam
Be especially careful about setting your alarm the night before. Save yourself the anxiety and embarrassment of arriving late.
