Visit the Lawrence Farmers Market!

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

In American culture, sometimes organic food gets a bad rap. This is surprising because most American’s try all sorts of diet crazes and workout fads, but never go for the basic fixes, eating right.

“Organic foods are those that are produced using environmentally sound methods that do not involve modern synthetic inputs such as pesticides and chemical fertilizers, or chemical food additives. For the vast majority of human history, agriculture can be described as “organic”. Only during the 20th century was a large supply of new synthetic chemicals introduced to the food supply. The organic farming movement arose in the 1940s in response to the industrialization of agriculture known as the Green Revolution.

Organic food production is a heavily regulated industry, distinct from private gardening. Currently, the European Union, the United States, Canada, Japan and many other countries require producers to obtain special certification in order to market food as “organic” within their borders.”

As the oldest farmers market in Kansas, the Lawrence Farmers Market offers a festive, bustling market with the freshest, healthiest food grown in Kansas as well as a strong sense of community among growers and consumers.

The LFM is a “producer only” market; everything sold is grown, prepared or crafted by its members. With more than 80 growers, ranchers, bakers and fine craftspeople, the Lawrence Farmers Market is the place to go for the freshest and finest quality produce, meat and artisan crafts. Shamrock Shuffle 5K in Lawrence!

Sunday, February 27th, 2011

The shamrock (♣) is a symbol of Ireland. It is a three-leafed old white clover. The name shamrock is derived from Irish seamróg, which is the diminutive version of the Irish word for clover. The shamrock was traditionally used for its medical properties and was a popular motif in Victorian times. According to what the Oxford English Dictionary calls “a late tradition” (first recorded in 1726), the plant was used by Saint Patrick to illustrate the doctrine of the Trinity. The shamrock has been registered as a trademark by the Government of Ireland. It is also informally used as an emblem for sports teams and state organisations within Ireland. The four-leaf clover is often confused with the shamrock. While the four-leaf clover is a symbol of good luck, the three-leafed shamrock is mainly an Irish Christian symbol of the Holy Trinity and has a different significance.

Now that you know the history of the Shamrock and its connotation with St. Patrick’s Day, you can understand why American’s have held on to its novelty. Lawrence will be hosting a 5K Road Race and a two mile fun walk. Race participants will be given a traditional Irish breakfast compliments of Johnny’s and sponsors. The race begins at 8am on March 5th at Johnny’s North. The race is free for spectators, but seeing as it is a fundraising event the participants will donate $20 before March 1st or $25 on race day.

Saturday, January 22nd, 2011

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, malts and triticale. Gluten is also used as a food additive in the form of a flavoring, stabilizing or thickening agent. A gluten-free diet is the only medically accepted treatment for celiac disease and wheat allergies. Several grains and starch sources are considered acceptable for a gluten-free diet. The most frequently used are corn, potatoes, rice, and tapioca. Various types of bean, soybean, and nut flours are sometimes used in gluten-free products to add protein and dietary fiber.
