Get Involved at UT - Arlington!

The school year has started at the UT - Arlington and students are saying “goodbye” to summertime and hello to homework, lectures, and assignments. These days, simply just going to class for all four undergraduate years and earning your bachelor’s degree is not the best way to attract a perspective employer. They are looking for well rounded individuals who participate in extra curricular activities, such as student organizations or intramural sports. These tips will get you started on the right track:

1. Pursue an activity that you enjoy: Like soccer? Try out for the club soccer team. Like arguing? Join the debate team. If there is something that you are passionate about and isn’t offered, start your own club!

2. Keep track of everything that you do: Work, community service, and any sort of extracurricular activities are excellent resume’ builders. Record however many hours you’ve completed in these events.

3. Start working on your resume’ now: Waiting till the last minute to scramble and create a resume’ is just not a good idea. If you start now, it will be a less stressful experience in the long run. There are many resources located online and on campus to assist you in this endeavor.

Follow these tips and you’ll be well on your way to Smart Student Living.

Best in the West

According to the Princeton Review, The University of Texas at Arlington was named one of the best colleges in the West. The nationally known educational services company chose 120 institutions for its “Best in the West” list are located in 15 states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. UT Arlington is one of 120 institutions The Princeton Review recommends in its “Best in the West” section of its website feature “2011 Best Colleges: Region by Region” posted on PrincetonReview.com.

Collectively, the 623 colleges named among the four regional best areas make up about 25 percent of the nation’s 2,500 four-year colleges. For the “2011 Best Colleges: Region by Region” list, the Princeton Review asked current students to rate their own schools on several issues from the accessibility of their professors to quality of the campus food. Students also answered questions about themselves, their fellow students and their campus life.

‘To The Sea’ Comes to Dallas

Students near Dallas, TX are in for a nice summer treat because singer-song writer Jack Johnson is bringing his To The Sea Tour to the Superpages.com Center on Tuesday, August 17, 2010.

Jack is known for his work in the soft rock and acoustic genres. In 2001, he achieved commercial success after the release of his debut album, Brushfire Fairytales. He has since released four more albums, a number of EPs and surfing movies/soundtracks. To date, he has sold 8 million albums worldwide. His highest-selling album is Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the Film Curious George, with 4 million albums shipped worldwide, due in large part to the success of the 2006 Curious George film.

50 Cent to Perform in Dallas

Students in the Arlington and Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex are in for a nice summer treat because Grammy Award winning rapper 50 Cent will be performing at Dallas’ Fair Park Bandshell on Friday, June 11th, 2010 as part of his nationwide, “The Invitation” tour.

50 Cent emerged as one of the biggest rap superstars in the world shortly after the release of his highly anticipated debut album,  Get Rich Or Die Trying’ which featured international smash hits “In Da Club” and “21 Questions”. The New York City based MC was put on the mainstream map with the help of fellow rap moguls, Eminem and Dr. Dre. He also introduced the world to G-Unit, his own rap group, with fellow rappers Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo. On top of being a rapper, the versatile entertainer is also an entrepreneur, executive producer, and actor.

The Planetarium at UT - Arlington

Are you a student at the University of Texas at Arlington that wants to do something fun over the summer? If so, you should visit the Planetarium on campus.

The state of the art facility, which opened in March 2007, is a 60 foot domed theater which seats 165 people and utilizes a high-tech digital projection system which will greatly enhance the viewing experience. The technology rich system not only simulates stars and planets as seen from Earth, but also enables virtual trips throughout the galaxy. In addition to the amazing aforementioned features, the Planetarium also hosts weddings, birthday parties, and other events. You can even “purchase” a Planetarium chair for $1,000 and honor a professor or loved one with a plaque inscribed with up to two lines of 28 characters each.

The current schedule features shows on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Shows include One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure, Black Holes, Violent Universe and $2 popular films. One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure features the famous Sesame Street characters Big Bird, Elmo, and Elmo’s Muppet friend from China, Hu Hu Zhu, who visits from China. Together they locate The Big Dipper, The North Star, and The Moon in the night sky.

No matter which feature you choose to view, the UT - Arlington planetarium is definitely worth a summer visit!
