UNCP Braves football is back!

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Pembroke, NC may be a small town, but these athletes who put their heart and soul on the football field September 4th, made it way worth the attention. For those of you who love football, this kickoff game was one to remember.

Your Braves completely shut out Fayetteville State with an impressive score of 39-0! Now that’s a way to start off a season! Fans gathered from UNCP dorms, Pembroke Place apartments, and even some out of town to make this record-breaking attendance of 6,429 fans. Grace P. Johnson Stadium was completely filled in black and gold to cheer on their beloved UNCP Braves to stomp the Fayetteville State Broncos.

UNCP BravesThe record-breaking attendance total was almost not the only record broken! If the Braves would have gained one more sack, they would have tied the record of most sacks that was set against Concord in 2007. They are definitely showing improvement and that’s something exciting for students, professors and community alike!

Whether you live on or off campus at Pembroke Place, for example, get out and meet other fellow Braves in UNCP’s upcoming away game versus St. Paul’s on September 11th. Not wanting to travel? No problem! UNCP’s next upcoming home game is September 25th versus Carson-Newman and it just so happens to be Parent’s Weekend. Grab friends & family & come to support UNCP!

Check out UNCP’s athletic schedule site for more football games!

Hail to UNCP!

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

The second annual “Hail to UNCP!” celebrating UNC Pembroke traditions will be held on Tues., August 17th at 8:30pm. The event will begin at the University Center Mall and end at the Ira Pate and Reba Lowry Bell Tower. The Spirit of the Carolinas Marching Band will lead the gathering from the mall to the tower, where participants will be welcomed by Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Dr. Diane Jones, and listen to a brief presentation about University traditions, including history, landmarks, events and remarkable individuals.

Questions like, ‘why is the UNCP mascot a red-tailed hawk and nicknames the Braves?’ or ‘what is the alma mater?’ all will be answered. The first annual “Hail to UNCP” event was a success last year, and this year’s is also expected to be strong. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community are encouraged to attend.

Not Your Average Student

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

As college students we are all busy trying to balance school, work, and a social life, but sometimes we all find ourselves with a little extra time on our hands.  Many UNCP students use their free time to give back to their community by volunteering for various organizations in the Pembroke area, which is an attribute that everyone should strive to attain.

As part of the UNCP community, Pembroke Place Apartments supports many local organizations including the Second Harvest Food Bank of NC.  Aside from the organizations that Pembroke Place supports, there are other volunteer opportunities that are supported by UNC Pembroke such as campus service organizations, or even on/off campus opportunities.

Whether you feel the need to help the Pembroke community, or maybe you are just looking for something to do with your free time, volunteering with any of these organizations is a wonderful and selfless idea.  Look at your calendar and find a day that you and a few friends all have available.  As a group decide on a place that you would all like to volunteer, and call the organization to make the plans.  Whether you join Habitat for Humanity in building a house for a family, or you donate gently used clothing to a local shelter, your time and service could make a world of difference to someone who is in a time of need!
