How Many Hours of Sleep Should You Get?

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

If you’re in college, you’re probably used to a lot of late nights followed by a ton of early mornings. Late nights with friends can put a huge damper on your sleeping pattern when you have to get up at 7am for your 8am class of Economics.

Studies are now saying that those who are only getting less than 6 hours are sleep dramatically increase their chance by 48% of having heart disease. This can eventually lead to death. In other cases, getting this lack of sleep increases your chance by 15% of having a stroke. Your health is more important than staying out until all hours of the night if you can’t make up that sleep that you lose. College students don’t realize just how much they are hurting their bodies by not engaging in a regular sleeping pattern.

Ideally, we should be getting a solid 7 hours of sleep a night, with a range of 6 - 8. This is optimum for a balanced healthy lifestyle. By starting this cycle early while you are young helps your sleeping pattern in later years.

Cramming and studying for exams is essential, but start at 6pm instead of at 1am to make sure your brain is well rested for that test!
