3 Ways to Go Green and Save!

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

These days, environmental conservation is more important than ever. Many say that going green is too costly, but there are several ways to do your part in protecting the environment and saving yourself a few bucks in the process:

1. Unplug the charger of chargeable appliances - When you aren’t currently charging your cell phone or laptop, unplug the charger. According to Future Forests, only 5% of the power drawn by cell phone chargers is actually used to charge phones. The other 95% is wasted when you leave it plugged into the wall, but not into your phone.

2. Turn off your lights if you don’t need them - Save yourself a few dollars by flipping that light switch off when there’s adequate light in your place or if you’re currently not in the room in which the light switch is flipped on. You may be enjoying yourself in an extremely comfortable position on your couch, but get up during that commercial break, turn off the lights, and think about the money that you’ll be saving. You’ll also be doing your part in going green.

3. When you aren’t home, raise the temperature of your air conditioner- Why leave the air conditioner on a really low temperature when you aren’t home? In warmer regions, Air Conditioning can account for 60-70% of your electric bill. Crank the temperature up by a few degrees when you’re out and about and you’ll see a noticeable difference in your energy bill.

Follow these Smart Student Living tips, and you’ll be well on your way to going green and saving green!

Gas Prices almost $3…again?

Friday, October 8th, 2010

BP is “a global oil and gas company headquartered in London, United Kingdom. It is the third largest energy company and the fourth largest company in the world measured by revenues and is one of the six oil and gas “supermajors”. After the oil spill the price of gas didn’t spike significantly. In fact, most oil companies, including BP who was responsible for the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, actually lowered the price of gas at their establishments. Although we did not see a rise in prices in the short-term, as a nation we are experiencing the long-term financial symptoms of it.

“Like most of the things you buy, oil prices are affected by supply and demand. However, oil prices are also affected by oil price futures, which are traded on the commodities futures exchange. These prices fluctuate daily, depending on what investors think the price of oil will be in the future. When traders think oil will be high, they bid it up even higher. This soon causes high gas prices.”

The citizens who will be most effected by these prices are the landlocked midwesterners who are used to paying moderate prices for fuel. Prices have been volatile in the most recent weeks ranging from $2.59 per gallon to $2.92 per gallon in more metropolitan areas. If you are a college student with a car, this can really have an effect on your weekly and monthly budget for expenses. It is important we are aware of the reasons things are changing in our economy. Remember, your Place Property is made for smarter student living. You can decrease the amount you need to spend on gas by taking advantage of the accommodations your place has to offer!
