Chicago’s Beaches are officially open!

Monday, May 30th, 2011

Living in a city, it is hard to find a cool breeze or a pool to soak up the summer lifestyle. Finally, it is the time of year when the Chicago’s beaches are open to the public, and freedom to explore the lake shores are only a drive away.

The Chicago Park District manages the city’s 26 miles of open and free lakefront for the enjoyment of Chicago residents and visitors. Admission to Chicago’s beaches is free. The 2011 beach season runs from May 27 to September 5. These beaches are: Leone, Montrose, North Avenue, 31st Street, 41st Street, South Shore and Calumet. You can walk, eat, jog, catch some rays, bike, rollerblade, sail, play volleyball, explore, or just relax along Chicago’s lakefront. Swimming is permitted only when lifeguards are on duty at all beaches from 11:00 am to 7 pm daily. Some beaches open earlier for swimming mid-summer.

Be sure to pack plenty of sunscreen and be responsible. Follow posted beach rules. There is no glass, no alcohol, and no smoking. Please do not feed birds, and properly dispose of food, diapers and other refuse. Grilling is only allowed in designated areas and coals should be disposed in the provided containers. Enjoy the start to your summer at the lake!

See Jellies at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago!

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

“Jellyfish are found in every ocean, from the surface to the deep sea. Scientists have evidence of these creatures roaming the seas for about 500 million years. Since jellyfish are not even vertebrates, let alone true fish, the usual word jellyfish is considered by some to be a misnomer, and American public aquariums have popularized use of the terms jellies or sea jellies instead. A group of jellyfish is sometimes called a bloom or a swarm.

They are not adapted to closed spaces, and depend on currents to transport them from place to place. Jellyfish are displayed in aquariums in many countries. Often the tank’s background is blue and the animals are illuminated by side light, increasing the contrast between the animal and the background. In natural conditions, many jellies are so transparent that they are nearly invisible.”

Get a fascinating glimpse of the wonders that lie beneath the ocean at the Shedd Aquarium’s newest exhibition - Jellies. Enter the world of these beautiful, translucent specimens, and discover the unique adaptations that have allowed these mysterious creatures to thrive and survive on Earth for over 500 million years - without the benefit of blood, bones or brains.

Learn how the fragility and enormous diversity of jellies - whose bodies are 95% water - makes studying them especially challenging for scientists. This exhibition runs through May 28, 2012 at the Shedd Aquarium. Prepare to be mesmerized!

Earth Day in the Chicago Park District

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Earth Day is a day that is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s natural environment. Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970. While this first Earth Day was focused on the United States, took it international in 1990 and organized events in 141 nations. Earth Day worked because of the spontaneous response at the grassroots level. No one has the time nor resources to organize 20 million demonstrators and the thousands of schools and local communities that participated. That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day. It organized itself.

On April 22, 1970, Earth Day marked the beginning of the modern environmental movement. Approximately 20 million Americans participated. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, Freeway and expressway revolts, the loss of wilderness, and air pollution suddenly realized they shared common values.

During the month of April, the Chicago Park District and Friends of the Parks join the rest of the world to celebrate Earth Day by cleaning up our parks and learning more about our planet and its resources. Join in with a couple hundred volunteers to celebrate Earth Day at various park locations and dates throughout the city.

Most Earth Day events focus on cleaning up the parks/nature areas and doing general maintentence (mulching, raking, etc.). The Humboldt Park event features entertainment after the clean-up, including music, community resources and more! These events will continue until April 30th.
