In Hollywood’s high-stakes summer movie season, R-rated comedies usually pick up the box-office scraps left behind by superheroes, robots and talking animals. The Hangover: Part II is a 2011 American comedy film and sequel to 2009’s The Hangover. The first “Hangover” was a surprise smash, an R-rated comedy that raked in more than $277 million at the domestic box office. So, a sequel was inevitable. And judging from the first day’s box office, people are awaiting it with open arms. Warner is also debuting “Hangover” nearly everywhere around the globe, another rarity for R-rated comedies as the genre’s culturally specific jokes often don’t play well overseas. But the original “Hangover” grossed $190 million internationally.

In part II, right after the bachelor party in Las Vegas, Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and Doug (Justin Bartha) travel to exotic Thailand for Stu’s wedding. Stu has planned for a subdued pre-wedding brunch, however, it goes seriously awry. What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but what happens in Bangkok can’t even be imagined.

Because of the original, hilarious quality of the first film, many fans are skeptical for the sequel. Memorial Day weekend is the kick-off for the line-up of great movies this summer, and most of us will head to the movies for entertainment in spite of the rumors!

31st Annual Barefoot on the Mall

Monday, April 12th, 2010

On Thursday April 22, from 2-8 p.m. East Carolina University will hold the 31st annual Barefoot on the Mall spring festival.  Barefoot represents the closing of the school year and the anticipation of the summer coming up.  It is a long awaited event for many ECU students.  The festival includes vendors, big prizes/contests, food, live music, and this year an outdoor showing of The Hangover. Past performers include John Mayer, Schwayze, Eric Hutchinson, and Jason Mraz.  This year’s performers include upcoming R&B star Jason Derulo, and rock band Carolina Liar, and the winner of ECU’s Battle of the Bands, Mixed Solution.

Jason Derulo is a hot new artist who emerged later last year.  His hits include In My Head, Whatcha Say, and Ridin’ Solo.  Before recording, Derulo was a songwriter for artists including Diddy, Danity Kane, and Sean Kingston.  The band Carolina Liar is best known for their hits “I’m Not Over” and “Show Me What I’m Looking For.”  Recently they appeared on American Idol and Fox Sports commercials.

This year’s Barefoot on the Mall should be the best yet!  From two hot performers to the vendors and the outdoor movie, the Student Activities Board is doing whatever they can to improve the festival significantly.  For questions about the event please visit ECU.edu
