Jeff Dunham Is Coming To Corpus Christi

Calling all UTPA students, ventriloquist/comedian Jeff Dunham is set to perform at American Bank Center on Thursday, February 23rd as part of his nationwide tour. Dunham, who is credited with reviving ventriloquism, has been dubbed “America’s favorite comedian” by Slate.com and according to the concert industry publication Pollstar, he is the top grossing standup act in America.

Dunham’s hilarious act includes various characters including Achmed the Dead Terrorist (whose introduction video on YouTube is the 9th most watched video of all time), and Walter, a disgruntled elderly man who has a negative and sarcastic view of today’s world. Time Magazine describes Dunham’s characters as “politically incorrect, gratuitously insulting, and ill-tempered.” In response to critics highlighting the offensive nature of his show, Dunham stated, “As a standup comic, it is my job to make the majority of people laugh, and I believe that comedy is the last true form of free speech.”

The Harlem Globetrotters Are Coming To Oakland!

If you’re a sports fan that goes to UC  Berkeley, you should definitely check out the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters at Oakland’s Oracle Arena on Saturday, January 14th . The dynamic group entertains fans by mixing high flying basketball skills with ridiculous theatrics. They will be visiting Oakland as part of their 2011-2012 world tour.

This New York-based team, has been amusing the masses since their inception in 1926. Notable members of the legendary squad include former NBA stars Wilt Chamberlain and Connie Hawkins. Originally they were a serious competitive team that only displayed their flashy moves after having a comfortable lead, but they eventually evolved into the hilarious and comedic athletes that they currently are. The group is so famous, that they even had their own Saturday morning cartoon and a live action variety show in the 1970s and in October 2009, the development on a new Harlem Globetrotters animated series was announced. Everyone should watch this amazing group of athletes/entertainers at least once in their lifetimes.

Cut Copy Is Headed To San Diego!

Students in San Diego should mark their calendars because Australian synthpop band, Cut Copy will be performing at 4th and B on Friday, October 14th. This up and coming groups fuses several genres to create an eclectic and appealing sound for concertgoers.

In 2001, the band was formed by Dan Whitford, a graphic designer/DJ who released a few singles before recruiting three more members in 2003. In 2004, they released their debut album, Bright Like Neon Love, which received positive reviews from notable publications such as Allmusic and NME. In 2008 they released their second album, In Ghost Colors, which received universal acclaim and debuted as the number one album in Australia.

They have toured with the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Junior Senior, Bloc Party, and Daft Punk and their songs have been featured on the video game FIFA 09 and television show Nip/Tuck. This past March, they headlined Miami’s Ultra Music festival, one of the highest grossing music festivals in the world.

Phoenix Takes the Stage in Minneapolis

Students in Minneapolis are in for a nice summer treat, because Grammy Award-winning alternative rock band, Phoenix, is coming to the State Theater on Thursday, August 12, 2010.

The French group draws elements from their eclectic ’80s background to arrive at a fusion of rock and synthesizers. They got their start touring the French bar circuit doing Hank Williams and Prince covers; two years later the band adopted the name Phoenix and pushed 500 copies of a single on its own label, Ghettoblaster. Phoenix had their mainstream breakthrough with the critically acclaimed album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (2009). In January of this year, they were awarded a Grammy for the Best Alternative Music Album and are continuing their celebration across the country, hitting venues like Madison Square Garden, Banaroo, and the Lollapaloosa Festival.

‘To The Sea’ Comes to Atlanta

Students near Atlanta, GA are in for a nice summer treat because singer-song writer Jack Johnson is bringing his To The Sea Tour to the Aaron’s Amphitheater at Lakewood on Friday, August 20, 2010.

Jack is known for his work in the soft rock and acoustic genres. In 2001, he achieved commercial success after the release of his debut album, Brushfire Fairytales. He has since released four more albums, a number of EPs and surfing movies/soundtracks. To date, he has sold 8 million albums worldwide. His highest-selling album is Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the Film Curious George, with 4 million albums shipped worldwide, due in large part to the success of the 2006 Curious George film.
