An All American Girl

Monday, April 5th, 2010

At 7:30 p.m. on April 30 country star Carrie Underwood will be performing at the Crown Center in Fayetteville, NC with guest performances by Craig Morgan and Sons of Sylvia.  Carrie was the winner of the fourth season of American Idol.  Since that fourth season of American Idol, Carrie Underwood has captured the hearts of many Americans.  It is not by her music, but by her undeniable talent, and by her girl-next-door personality.

She has accomplished so much with just three albums so far in her career, and it seems the accomplishments are still coming.  Since her first album in 2006 she has had many Grammy nominations, several Grammy awards, and twelve hit singles to reach number one on record charts.  Aside from her music, Carrie loves giving back to others.  Giving back is a huge part of her life and she spends a lot of time doing so.  She says, “Everybody has the power to do something, to be a contributing force, and I would rather people look back on my life and say, ‘She made the world a better place.’  We can all do things like that, and I believe that when opportunities arise for you to do good, you should do good.”

Miss Underwood will be performing at the end of this month, and for you UNC Pembroke students who want to attend, the concert is less than an hour away so don’t miss out!  For questions or ticket information go to CarrieUnderwoodOfficial.com

Pride in the American Indian Heritage

Friday, March 5th, 2010

What is heritage to you?  Our heritage is something we should all be proud of, but many of us don’t even know where our family tree really begins.  In the small town of Pembroke NC, which is rich in American Indian heritage, it is very important to the residents to keep the Lumbee Indian heritage alive. It is the resident’s pride in the Lumbee Indians that makes the small community so tight-knit.

The Lumbee Indians are the ninth largest tribe in the United States that originated in North Carolina but also reside in parts of Virginia, and South Carolina.  The name Lumbee came from the Lumber River that runs through Robeson County, NC.  At over eighty percent, they are the majority of the population in Pembroke NC.

When I took a visit to Pembroke last summer, it was evident to me that the Lumbee Indians are still an extremely integral part of the town’s culture.  The community pride can be seen everywhere, including at UNC Pembroke, as their mascot is the Brave, and even in the annual Miss Lumbee pageant, and on every corner you turn in Robeson County, it is obvious that you are in Lumbee Country!
